Shirley Ann Smith, 85, of 150 Kane St., Wilcox, died Saturday morning, Nov. 25, 2017 at Penn Highlands Elk in St. Marys following a short illness.
She was born Sept. 4, 1932 in Wilcox, daughter of the late Charles and Violet Whippo VonArx. She married James N. Smith on Oct. 25, 1952 in the First Presbyterian Church, Johnsonburg. He died Dec. 10, 2007.
She resided in Wilcox all her life and graduated from Wilcox High School in 1950.
At the time of her death she was the oldest member of the Wilcox Presbyterian Church where she was also a member of the Darcos Circle. She was a member of the Wilcox Senior Center and Wilcox Library. She loved being with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved visiting her sister and her family. She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed playing cards, bingo and dominoes.
She and her husband had owned and operated the Grant House in Wilcox for 37 years before retiring in 1987. She had also worked at Stackpole Carbon Co. in Johnsonburg for several years.
She is survived by one son, James A. Smith and his wife Susan of Wilcox; one daughter, Linda, Mrs. John Bush of Wilcox; three grandchildren, Jesse Smith and his wife Molly, Ginger Smith and Christopher Bush and his wife Ashley; two great-grandchildren, Ellie Bush Adrionna and Violet Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Donald, Roger and Keith VonArx and Charles in infancy; and two sisters, Vivian Smith and Jane McAlee.
A funeral service for Shirley A. Smith will be conducted Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 11 a.m. at Wilcox Presbyterian Church. Officiating will be Rev. Mark Cantaral, pastor. Interment will be in Wilcox Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the Anthony F. Ferragine Funeral Home, 401 Chestnut St., Johnsonburg, on Tuesday evening, Nov. 28 from 6-8 p.m.
