Roger A. "Shorty" Halquist, 89, a resident of Sena Kean Manor, Smethport, and formerly of Marvin Street, Wilcox, passed away early Saturday morning, May 10, 2025, at Sene Kean. He was born on February 12, 1936, in Wilcox, a son to the late John Alfred and Anna Lundberg Halquist. On January 2, 1960, in Nazareth Lutheran Church, Wilcox, he married Jane M. Boddorf. She preceded him in death on October 25, 2008.
A lifelong resident of Wilcox, Shorty was a 1954 graduate of Wilcox High School. He was a member of Tabor Lutheran Church in Kane and NRA. Roger loved spending time with his family, reading, watching the Pirates and Steelers and hunting, and he was especially proud of harvesting his first crossbow buck in 1984. He was very proud of his home and yard and was meticulous in its upkeep.
For his excellent work in the woods, Roger received the 1992 Allegheny Hardwoods Utilization Group Outstanding Logging Safety Award and the 1992 Northeast Loggers Association Outstanding Logging Operator Award.
Shorty was a Korean Era Navy Vet serving with the SeaBees as a Driver Petty Officer 3rd Class where he helped to build the airstrip in the Philippines and other projects in Japan.
He retired in 2001 after 15 years as owner-operator of Roger Halquist Logging. He was also part-owner of Halquist Logging for 20 years and had also worked at Stackpole Carbon Co. in Kane.
Roger is survived by his children, Shawn Halquist (Deana) of Brockport, NY, Don Halquist & his partner Bill Evans of Port Townsend, WA and Brenda Bevacqua (Mike) of Johnsonburg, his grandchildren, Cody and Noah Halquist, Sarah Buehler (Patrick) and Eric Bevacqua (MaryKate) and his great-grandchildren, Evelyn, Otto and Heath Buehler and Daniel Bevacqua.
He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family of a family that included 14 brothers and sisters.
In addition to his parents and wife, Roger is predeceased by brothers, Harry, Henry, John, Raymond and Donald Halquist and sisters Helen Richardson, Hildegard Gressons, Dorothy Thompson, Frances Wantuck, Phyllis Johnson, Patty Gavazzi, Jean Ferko and Tillie Johnson.
A Funeral Service for Roger A. "Shorty" Halquist will be conducted at Tabor Lutheran Church, Kane, on Saturday May 24, 2025, at 11 AM with Rev. David Pflieger as celebrant. Interment will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens, Ridgway.
Friends will be received at the Anthony F. Ferragine Funeral Home and Cremation Services Chapel, 401 Chestnut St., Johnsonburg on Friday May 23, 2025, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM.
Military Honors will be accorded by the Johnsonburg-Wilcox-Ridgway Servicemen's Detail. Detail members are asked to assemble at the funeral home on Friday evening, May 23, 2025, at 5:15 PM.
