Mary M. Lazzo, 89, of Elk Haven Nursing Home, St. Marys, PA and formerly of Wilcox and Ft. Myers, FL, died Tuesday evening, October 5, 2021 at Elk Haven following a lengthy illness. She was born on January 31, 1932 in Tuxedo Park, NY a daughter to the late John J. and Marie Howco Lazzo. Mary had been a resident of Wilcox since 1972 and had spent her winters in Ft. Myer, FL. She was a graduate of George F. Baker High School in Tuxedo Park, NY and received her LPN from St. Agnes Catholic Hospital in White Plains, NY. She had been a Novice at the Sisters of Charity, Mount Saint Vincent Convent on the Hudson, New York, NY and received her RN from Orange County Community College, Middletown, NY.
Mary was a member of several RN clubs and organizations and the Favorite Dames of Kane with Red Hat Fame.
She had been employed by Tuxedo Hospital, Tuxedo Park, NY and Saint Agnes Catholic Hospital, White Plains, NY where she was Head Pediatric Nurse for 33 years.
"Mary received her first call as a young teenager to enter the Sisters of Charity Convent, Mount St. Vincent on the Hudson, NY. She chose to remain close to her true calling by becoming the Head Nurse in Pediatrics at St. Agnes Catholic Hospital in White Plains, NY. She truly enjoyed caring for hundreds of babies and children during her thirty-three year nursing career.
She received her second calling on October 5, 2021, a sort of offer you can't refuse, for an assignment from which she will not be returning. This assignment comes with a high sign-on bonus including an enormous reunion with family and friends she has not seen in a long time. Her new mission takes her to a wonderful place where she will be socializing, gardening, knitting and traveling to her hearts content, music and love are guaranteed, food is delicious and you never gain an ounce".
All who knew Mary want her to know that she did a great job and wish her a safe journey to her new Eternal Life assignment.
Mary is survived by a brother John E. Lazzo of Beaufort, SC and a sister, Nancy J., Mrs. Joseph D. Szymanski of Wilcox and Ft. Myers, FL. She is also survived by her incredible nephew Jesse J. Szymanski and by his equally incredible fiancé Sally Smith as well as many other nieces and nephews. Also surviving are her special friends Virginia Thorwart, Millie Olmstead and Shirley Zimmett.
In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by a brother James W. Lazzo of Oak Harbor, MI.
A private service Mary M. Lazzo will be held at the convenience of the family with private interment in Holy Rosary Cemetery, Johnsonburg. A public funeral service for Mary will be conducted at a later date and will be announced.
