Obituary

Joseph A. Cherry, 98, of 706 Bridge Street, Johnsonburg, passed away Wednesday afternoon, March 11, 2026, at Elk Haven Nursing Home, St. Marys, following a lengthy illness. He was born December 17, 1927, in Johnsonburg, a son to the late Patsy and Theresa Steinbach Cherry. On November 26, 1949, he married Joyce E. Nortum. She preceded him in death on December 5, 2023.

A lifelong resident of Johnsonburg, Joe was a graduate of Johnsonburg High School and was a member of Holy Rosary Church. Joe enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, camping and woodworking. He was a man of many talents, able to fix most anything, a mechanic and a sports fan who loved his New York Yankees and San Francisco 49rs.

A World War II Army Vet, Joe served as a Private and was a small arms and weapons mechanic.

In 1981, Joe retired from PennTech Papers, Johnsonburg, after 34 years of service. He and his wife had also owned and operated the Blue Jay Bar in Johnsonburg for over 10 years.

Joe is survived by two sons, Stephen Cherry (Rhonda) of Wilcox and Frank Cherry (Luann) of Wilcox, 12 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by siblings Theresa Cherry (David Wolfe) of Johnsonburg, Francis "Francie" Cherry (Glenda) of Johnsonburg and Raymond "Ray" Cherry (Gayle) of Johnsonburg and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife Joyce, Joe is predeceased by a son Joseph A. Cherry, Jr. in infancy and son Joseph L. Cherry.

Funeral services and interment for Joseph A. Cherry will be private and at the convenience of the family. There will be no visitation.

Arrangements are under direction of the Anthony F. Ferragine Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 401 Chestnut Street, Johnsonburg.
