George P. Pontious Sr., 81, of 197 Garfield St., Johnsonburg, died Thursday morning, July 7, 2016 at his residence following a lengthy illness.
He was born April 18, 1935 in Tobey Valley, son of the late James and Violet Kline Pontious. He married Nardina Marrone on March 17, 1956 and she survives.
He resided in Johnsonburg for the past 60 years and was a 1954 graduate of Ridgway High School. He was a member of Holy Rosary Church, Prince of Piedmont Club and Johnsonburg Senior Center. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and camping. He also loved to bowl. He was a past scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts in the 1950s.
George had worked at the Market Basket in Johnsonburg for several years, Thorco Bottling of Johnsonburg for 25 years and the Prince of Piedmont club for several years.
In addition to his wife at home, he is survived by five sons, Joseph A. Pontious and his wife Carla of Johnsonburg, Philip A. Pontious and his friend Julie of Johnsonburg, David W. Pontious and his wife Judy of St. Marys, Brian K. Pontious of St. Marys and George P. Pontious Jr. and his wife Lisa of Johnsonburg; seven grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; his sister, Violet Vollmer of St. Marys; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A Mass of Christian Burial for George P. Pontious Sr. will be held Wednesday, July 13 at 10 a.m. at Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg. Interment will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery, Johnsonburg. Friends will be received at the Anthony F. Ferragine Funeral Home, 401 Chestnut St., Johnsonburg on Tuesday evening, July 12 from 6-8 p.m.
