Edward G. Mehalko, 78, of 88 Hitching Post Dr., Dover, Delaware, formerly of Wilcox, died early Thursday morning, Feb. 1, 2018 at Bay Health-Kent General Hospital in Dover, Delaware following a lengthy illness.
He was born June 3, 1939 in Wilcox, son of the late George S. and Maritta N. "Nellie" Turzanski Mehalko. He married Zella M. Jesso on Nov. 2, 1963 in Picadilly, Newfoundland, Canada, and she survives.
He resided in Dover, Delaware since 1988 and was a 1957 graduate of Johnsonburg High School. He attended Penn State University for one year.
He was a member of St. Anne's Church in Wilcox. He served in the United States Air Force for 27 1/2 years until his retirement as a Senior Master Sergeant. He was an active duty serviceman during the Vietnam War serving overseas for a total of 12 1/2 years of his service.
After his retirement from the Air Force, he had been employed by the State of Delaware Department of Corrections before retiring after 16 years of service.
In addition to his wife at home, he is survived by four children, Sharon M. Mehalko of Dover, Delaware, Donna L., Mrs. Brian Holmberg of Middletown, Delaware, Sandra K. "Sandie," Mrs. Keith Miltenberger of Magnolia, Delaware and George M. Mehalko and his wife Rhonda of Engelwood, Colorado; eight grandchildren, Adam, Marcus and Alyssa Clark, Randy and Amanda Holmberg and Matthew, James and Michael Buckley; five great-grandchildren, Aliyah, Tatem, Haiden, Scarlett and Jaiden; two sisters, Marie, Mrs. Randy Kalp of Fayetteville and Catherine Mowrey of Wilcox; three brothers, John Mehalko of Kane, Joseph Mehalko of Wilcox and Donald Mehalko and his wife Martha "Mary" of Magnolia, Delaware; and a sister-in-law, Anita Mehalko of Wilcox.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Charles E. Mehalko; and two brothers, James and Thomas Mehalko.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Edward G. Mehalko will be held Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 10 a.m. at St. Anne's Church, Wilcox. Officiating will be Rev. David J. Wilson, pastor. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Rasselas.
Friends will be received at the Anthony F. Ferragine Funeral Home, 401 Chestnut St., Johnsonburg, on Monday, Feb. 5 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.
Military honors will be accorded by the Johnsonburg Servicemen's Burial Detail. Detail members are asked to assemble at the funeral home Tuesday morning at 9:15 a.m.
