Calvin S. "Jiggs" O'Rourke, 91, of 804 Rasselas Rd., Wilcox, died Wednesday evening, Nov. 23, 2016 at the Lutheran Home at Kane following a lengthy illness.
He was born May 2, 1925 in Johnsonburg, a son of the late Marshall and Lila Beck O'Rourke.
He married Irene Powell on June 14, 1945 in St. Ann's Church, Wilcox, she preceded him in death Jan. 20, 2013.
He lived in Wilcox most of his life and attended Johnsonburg schools.
He was a member of Johnsonburg United Methodist Church, and was an avid hunter and a former boxer. He had owned and operated the McFarland House in Wilcox for 10 years and the "Ponderosa" in Wilcox. He loved carpentry and masonry. He was very active in the Wilcox Volunteer Fire Department. He was politically active and had run for office and had never missed a vote for 50 years.
"Jiggs" was a WWII Navy veteran serving at sea as a seaman second class as a gunner. He received the American Campaign Medal, European-African Medal with one star and the WWII Victory Medal.
He was employed by Penntech Papers, Johnsonburg Mill for 43 years before retiring in 1985.
He is survived by his son, Calvin D. O'Rourke and his wife Cheryl of Smethport; four daughters, Rebecca Walters of Wilcox, Inda, Mrs. Richard O'Connell of Wilcox, Fay, Mrs. Jeff Glissman of Laramie, Wyoming and Kelle, Mrs. Tom Jacobs of Johnsonburg; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Lemmon of Silver Creek Terrace, St. Marys.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Darcie O'Rourke; two sons, Darby and Kirby O'Rourke; five brothers, Marshall "Cecil," Walter "Turk," Norman "Corky," Morris and Bernard O'Rourke; and two sisters, Colleen McCamey and Shirley DanJoy.
A funeral service for Calvin S. "Jiggs" O'Rourke will be conducted Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 10 a.m. at the Anthony F. Ferragine Funeral Home, 401 Chestnut St., Johnsonburg. Officiating will be Rev. David J. Wilson, pastor of Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Rasselas.
Friends will be received at the funeral home Wednesday morning from 8:30-9:30 a.m.
Military honors will be accorded by the Johnsonburg Servicemen's Detail. Detail members are asked to assemble at the funeral home Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m.
