Betty J. Olmstead Calla, 90, of 6540 Ridgway-Johnsonburg Road, Johnsonburg, died Monday morning (Nov. 10, 2014) at Ridgeview Elder Care, Curwensville, following a lengthy illness.
She was born March 21, 1924 in Niagara Falls, N.Y., daughter of the late Louis Olmstead and Leona Norlin Olmstead McMahon.
She resided in Johnsonburg most of her life and attended Johnsonburg High School.She was a member of Johnsonburg Women's Club and the Johnsonburg Senior Center where she was a volunteer to deliver Meals on Wheels. She was an accomplished seamstress and artist and was known to make the best fudge around.She was employed by Stackpole Carbon Co. in Johnsonburg for 10 years. She had also worked for Sylvania in Emporium and St. Marys, Rinovato's Pharmacy, Munn's, and she worked in private home care.
She is survived by a son, James L. Calla of Johnsonburg; two daughters, Sandra Lee "Sandy," Mrs. Sam Alaskey of Johnsonburg, and Valerie, Mrs. David Romano of Toms River, N.J.; four grandchildren, James and Jeffrey Earnshaw, Stacy DeVivo and Scotty Alaskey; five great-grandchildren, Mia and Mario DeVivo, Jade Freeeoff, Morgan Earnshaw and McKenna Alaskey; three brothers, Maurice Olmstead and his wife Mille of Johnsonburg, Richard McMahon and his wife Dee of Chyenne, Wyo., and John "Fuzzy" McMahon of Johnsonburg.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Ronald and Walter Olmstead; and a sister, Gloria Gigliotti.A Funeral Service for Betty J. Calla will be conducted at the Anthony F. Ferragine Funeral Home, 401 Chestnut St., Johnsonburg on Friday, Nov. 14 at 10 a.m. Officiating will be Rev. David J. Wilson, Pastor of Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg.Interment will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery.Friends will be received at the funeral home Thursday evening, Nov. 14 from 6-8 p.m.
