Barbara Marie Czekai, 90, of 401 Woodland Avenue, Johnsonburg, died Thursday morning, December 9, 2021 at UPMC Kane Community Hospital, Kane following a brief illness. She was born on February 22, 1931 in Johnsonburg a daughter to Leroy and Dorothy Hunt Kreckel. On February 21, 1953 in Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg, she married John S. Czekai. He preceded her in death on March 8, 2019. Barb was a lifelong resident of Johnsonburg and was a 1949 graduate of Johnsonburg High School. She was a 1952 graduate of the Hamot Hospital School of Nursing and began her nursing career at the Elk County General Hospital ER in Ridgway. She then went on to work for the American Heart Assn. and was the first community nurse to open the Johnsonburg Office of the Ridgway Visiting Community Nurses Assn. Barb then worked for Dr. Chau H. Wu at the Johnsonburg Health Center for many years and then returned to work for the Ridgway Visiting Community Nurses before her retirement from nursing.

Barb was a member of Holy Rosary Church and the Johnsonburg Senior Center where she and her husband were Meals on Wheels delivery drivers for many years. She was on the Committee to establish the Johnsonburg Health Center, she was on the Johnsonburg Alumni Committee for many years and was a member of the Johnsonburg Election Board for many years receiving an award for her years of continuous service. Upon her retirement, Barb and her husband loved to travel, taking many trips to Florida, trips to Alaska and the Western States and a Caribbean Cruise. While at home, she loved flowers and plants and loved to garden, to go to the casino and to play bingo.

Barb is survived by her two children; Susan Czekai of Johnsonburg and her fiancé Lou Morello of Bradford and Stephen Czekai and his wife Carol of Penfield, two grandchildren; Jessica, Mrs. Mitchell O'Neill and David Czekai and a brother Thomas Kreckel and his wife Martha of Wilcox.  A nephew Brandon Kreckel and his wife Darlene and a niece Breanna Kreckel and her fiancé Hunt Gibson also survive.

In addition to her parents and husband, she is predeceased by a brother Bryant Kreckel.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Barbara M. Czekai will be conducted at Holy Rosary Church on Tuesday December 14, 2021 at 10 AM with Fr. David Wilson, Pastor as officiant. Interment will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery and will be private.

Friends will be received at the Anthony F Ferragine Funeral Home and Cremation Services chapel 401 Chestnut Street Johnsonburg, PA  Monday afternoon from 3 to 5 PM
