Amanda Eileen
Hasney
Mar 6, 1922 — Feb 11, 2021
Wilcox
Amanda Eileen Hasney passed away at Elk Haven Nursing Home in St. Marys, at the age of 98 years old early Thursday morning, Feb. 11, 2021.
Amanda Hasney had formerly lived on Marvin Street in Wilcox, having lived in Wilcox for 74 years. She was born on March 6, 1922 in Johnsonburg, in the home of her parents, the late Joseph Frank Jakuboski and Stella Louise Piurkoski Jakuboski.
She married Joseph Andrew Hasney in Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg, on October 10, 1942. Joseph preceded her in death on July 19, 1975.
Surviving are her three daughters, Jean Francis Guffey of Kane, Diana Lind (Daniel) Azzato of Saint Marys, and Ann Katherine (Robert) Kraft, also of Saint Marys. Amanda is also survived by three grandchildren, David Charles Guffey, Jr. of Kane, Douglas Leonard Guffey of Baltimore, MD, and Kimberly Ann Kraft of Tarentum.
She is also survived by a brother-in-law and sister-in-law Daniel and Donna Hasney of Wilcox, and many nieces and nephews. Among them are her nephew David Barber, who held a special place in her heart and whose help and many visits were always greatly appreciated by her and her family, and niece Valerie Hasney Cook, whose chats she enjoyed while getting her hair done.
Besides her husband and parents, Mrs. Hasney was also preceded in death by six siblings; two brothers, Alex Jakuboski and Edward Jakuboski, and four sisters; Sophia Kreckel, Jennie Posey Collier, Virginia (Honey) Zimmerman, and Eileen Rhed. Amanda was the last surviving member of her family. She was also preceded in death by two grandsons, Joshua and Jason Kraft, who died in infancy.
Amanda attended Johnsonburg Catholic Schools and was a former employee of the Stackpole Carbon Company division in Johnsonburg. She was employed by the Housekeeping Staff of the Kane Community Hospital for ten years, retiring in 1985. She loved and enjoyed the people she met while working there. She was a member of Saint Anne's Church of Wilcox, and a member of the Catholic Women's Club.
She enjoyed walking and went for a walk up the main street of Wilcox almost every day up until her 94th birthday. She was often seen with her good friend and walking buddy, the now deceased Jenny Kissel, and with her friend Sandy Myers, who provided her with many shopping trips. She had a great love for St. Anne's Church and her little town of Wilcox.
Family came first with her, and she was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She took great pride in taking care of her home. She worked hard to maintain the home she and her husband Joe created together. She loved decorating her house, and especially enjoyed decorating for the holidays. She was a talented artist in her younger days and sketched many beautiful drawings. In later years she enjoyed painting ceramics.
One of her favorite sayings was, "At least we can laugh", and that she did often and until tears ran down her cheeks. She had a "green thumb" when it came to growing flowers and loved all varieties. Amanda was very proud of her Polish heritage and enjoyed telling of her many childhood memories of growing up in a traditional Polish home. As a gifted cook, she prepared many meals of traditional Polish food throughout the years, and no one could top her when it came to all the delicious pies and sweets she made. She had a "sweet tooth" and loved her cookies. She also loved music, and in her younger days, she and her husband Joe loved to dance the Polka. May she be dancing and laughing now! She will be greatly missed by her family and we know we were very fortunate to have her in our lives as long as we did. We will cherish her memory and her love and let it live on.
In 2015 Amanda moved to Elk Haven Nursing home in St. Marys. Amanda enjoyed talking to and joking with many of the wonderful staff of Elk Haven. She considered all of them as her friends.
Friends and family are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial for Amanda E. Hasney to be conducted at St. Anne's Church, 75 Buchanan St., Wilcox on Saturday February 13, 2021 at 10 a.m. with Fr. David Wilson, Pastor officiating. Visitation will be private.
